Joint Statement: The Future of Chestnuts Community Centre in Haringey

After more than ten years of managing Chestnuts Community Centre, the Trustees of The Bridge Renewal Trust have informed the council of their intention to end their tenancy and are currently in discussions with the council about timings for exiting the building.

During this time, Chestnuts has become a much-loved community hub, hosting more than 30 regular groups and welcoming thousands of residents each year. Together, The Bridge, Haringey Council, local partners, and volunteers have created a vibrant space where people from all backgrounds can connect, learn, celebrate, and support their health and wellbeing.

Rachel Hughes, Chair of The Bridge Renewal Trust, said:

“We are incredibly proud of all that has been achieved at Chestnuts over the past decade. It has been a privilege to work with Haringey Council, our partners, and local residents to make the centre such a valued part of community life. As we move into this next phase, we are committed to working closely with the Council to ensure a smooth transition and to help secure a positive future for Chestnuts.”
Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Ajda Ovat and Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Local Economy, Cllr Ruth Gordon, said:

“We want to thank The Bridge Renewal Trust for all their hard work over the last ten years.

“We are determined to maintain the community spirit in the Chestnuts Community Centre and help to support local people’s wellbeing.

“We are now working together to ensure as minimal disruption as possible for user groups and will work closely to find a solution and plan a smooth handover.

“The most important thing is to ensure the centre continues to thrive under new management for the benefit of all residents and we will meet with user groups to ensure this takes place.”
During this transition period, all current services and activities will continue as normal, while options are considered for the future use of the building.

The Bridge and the council will continue to keep residents, service providers, and community partners informed throughout the process.
