Cypriot sailor and London Olympic Games silver medallist, Pavlos Kontides, clinched the Men’s Laser Championship in Split Croatia, securing his biggest victory in his career.
Due to strong winds, today’s races were cancelled giving Pavlos, who lead the classification on Monday, the final victory. Rio Olympic Games Gold medallist, Australia’s Tom Burton followed in second place and fellow Aussie Matthew Wearn finished third.
So far Kontides’ best performance in Laser World Championship was four years ago in Oman where he finished 2nd.
“I am very happy. I am a World Champion for the first time in my career, this is a dream come true,” Kontides said after winning the title.
“I was well prepared for the race and this was obvious in the results,” Kontides added, recalling the setback he had with a torn sail.
“Justice was served. Laser World Championship is a real war as 150 athletes take part in the race.”
Following his victory, Kontides is expected to climb in the top spot of the World Laser Rankings for the first time in his career.
