Lifer seeks parole in Cyprus

The parole board will rule on Monday, November 10, whether Cyprus’ longest serving convict Panayiotis Kafkaris can be released on parole, Philenews said on Saturday. Kafkaris was sentenced to three life terms for the triple murder of Limassol businessman Panicos Michail and his two underage children in 1987.

He has been in prison for 27 years. Kafkaris, aged 69, had taken his case to the European Court of Human Rights. This set in process a change in the law which allows convicts serving a life sentence to apply for parole after serving 12 years. In his application to the parole board, Kafkaris cited his good conduct in prison, his age and the 27 years he has served in jail. Michail and his two sons were killed by a car bomb which exploded when he started the car to take the two boys to school.
