At a roundtable discussion organised by the Association of European Journalist at the London Office of the European Parliament, Lord Andrew Adonis, went through the processes of leaving the European Union and the wider consequences.

Doros Partasides, the RIK London Correspondent and Stella Protopapa-Dinenis participated in this topical event.

Lord Adonis, who seats as a cross bencher in the House of Lords, pinpointed several past mistakes committed by both Labour and Conservative governments that contributed to the outcome of the referendum. He was certain that the enormity and complexity of the task will make it impossible for the UK to leave the EE within the time frame of the article 50 and predicted that a there will be a significant change in the public mood once the consequences of leaving will become evident and people realise that there can be no deal that would be superior to the existing relationship with the EE. There is a fifty-fifty chance he said that the referendum result will be cancelled.

Responding to a question by Doros Partasides on the impact of Brexit on the relationship between the UK and Cyprus, he expressed the view that there will be problems that need to be tackled soon.

Lord Adonis also mentioned that he is entitled to Cypriot citizenship on account of his father’s origin from Cyprus, and he thinks that he may have to apply for citizenship in the future. Thanking the two Cypriot participants in the debate, he promised them to meet again and continue their collaboration.
