Lucky escape for chemist after Barnet crash

A chemist says he feels “lucky” after a BMW came within inches of smashing through his shop window in New Barnet Friday morning.

The collision happened at just after 9am, when the BMW came off East Barnet Road before hitting a Range Rover that was parked half on the pavement and smashing into the side of Mountford Pharmacy.

Manager Harry Mehta had been busy dispensing when he heard a loud bang, and saw the car hit the side of the shop.

“I heard a bang and was like ‘what happened?’,” he told the press. “I saw it had hit the Range Rover and then because it was still accelerating hit the side of us.

“Luckily a patient’s Range Rover was parked half on the pavement. If the Range Rover wasn’t there it would have been inside the shop.

“We feel very lucky.”

The driver, who witnesses said was in her 30s, was taken to a north London hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Temporary one-way traffic lights are currently in place on that section of East Barnet Road near the junction with Station Road due to road works.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said the collision had involved a BMW, a VW Golf and a Range Rover.

She added: “The road was re-opened at approximately 10.30am to allow for traffic flow. The road was closed again at approximately 12.50pm so that the BMW could be recovered from the building.”

No arrests have been made.
