Marcos Baghdatis in the USA

Marcos will return to the lawns of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, where he opens against a familiar opponent in sixth seed Gilles Muller.

Muller, who recently announced that he will retire from pro tennis after the season, finished runner-up in Newport in 2016. He and Marcos know each other from their junior days and they faced off on four occasions as professionals.

In their tour-level head-to-head, Marcos owns a 3-1 lead, including wins in Atlanta and Stockholm in 2015, as well as at Roland Garros in 2016. Muller won their most recent encounter in Tokyo two years ago.

Marcos is making his second appearance on the grass of Newport, having reached the semi-finals on debut in 2016. If he beats Muller, he will face either a qualifier or Spain’s Marcel Granollers in the second round. Top seed Adrian Mannarino potentially looms in the quarters.

In addition, Marcos will be playing doubles alongside Mischa Zverev. They open against fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela.
