Message from UK Cypriot Emine Ibrahim, Labour candidate for London Assembly elections

I’d like to start by saying thank you to Greek and Cypriot Londoners for your continued solidarity and support. Despite having suffered greatly in the past year, like so many of our capital’s communities, we have stayed united and shown inspirational generosity and selflessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
London’s Greek and Cypriot community has contributed enormously to the fabric of our great city and plays a major role in our civic and cultural life.
I have been proud to witness NEPOMAK UK volunteers delivering food parcels to the Cypriot Community Centre to ensure vulnerable members of our community in Haringey – where I am a councillor – are looked after.
I know that Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, agrees. In his re-election manifesto, he has committed to making sure that London remains open to EU citizens who have made London their home and who have contributed to our economy, culture and society in so many ways.
The choice this election is a clear one between Sadiq Khan who stands up for our communities, our small businesses and our diversity and the Conservative candidate who simply doesn’t share London’s values.
On polling day – Thursday May 6 – each voter will have 3 votes: one for the Mayor of London and two for the London Assembly. The London Assembly votes are for a London Assembly Constituency Member and a London-wide Assembly member – the position I am running for.
This voting system is not ‘winner takes all’, if used carelessly it risks splitting the Labour vote. That is why I urge you to use all three of your votes for Labour.
With Sadiq as our candidate, a vote for Labour is a vote for London so please vote to help give him the team he needs to deliver for you.
I am so proud to be part of Labour’s London-wide candidate list, and I am especially delighted to be the first member of the London Cypriot diaspora to be in with a chance of election to the Greater London Assembly.
My family arrived in North London in the 1960s and 1970s from Cyprus and I know they are incredibly proud of me for giving back to the city which gave me everything.
This will be an election like no other in a year like no other and I hope Greek and Cypriot Londoners will come out in strong numbers to support Sadiq and to help get me and many more Labour Assembly members into City Hall.
