TUNEDIN.LONDON, live music in the film world’s best kept secret, the Sands Films Studios in Rotherhithe, takes place throughout May – July 2016.
Participating in this world music series is the Michalis Kouloumis Trio who will perform on Wednesday 1st June 2016 at Sands Film Studios, 82 St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, SE16 4HZ.
Led by award-winning violinist Michalis Kouloumis whose strong musical roots are in Cyprus, this trio’s stunning repertoire comprises music from the Eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus, Greece, Turkey) along with original compositions, soulful improvisations and plenty of experimentation. Michalis Kouloumis is widely appreciated for his improvisational skills in “taksims” and the use of special techniques such as overtones in his playing. Two Cretan musicians, Nicos Ziarkas on Cretan lute and guitar, and Thodoris Ziarkas on double bass and Cretan lyra, complete the line-up. Since a sold-out debut concert at the Vortex Jazz Club last year, the trio has left a positive impact on World-music lovers and have gone on to appear in many venues in London such as the Elgar Room (Royal Albert Hall), Jamboree and Green Note and festivals such as Bloomsbury (London) and Pafos17 (European Capital of Culture, Cyprus). At the moment they are working on their debut album with material from their homelands, new compositions and improvisations. The venue is a deliciously sumptuous sofa-filled home-crafted cinema like none other, housed in a beautiful building oozing the history both of the neighbourhood and of costume creation. Even the loos are like none other in London!! Uniquely again, a ticket entitles you to free tea/coffee. Stronger stuff is available at the riverside Mayflower Pub, only a few cobble stones away. Sands Films is an inspiringly intimate place to hear fabulous music. Tickets are available at http://tunedin.london/ and cost £14.00 each. Performance begins at 7.45pm.
