Mini Police learn about road safety

Children taking part in a Mini Police scheme in Welwyn Garden City have completed a road safety session.

The Year 5 class at Homerswood Primary School have been taking part in the Mini Police initiative since last month.

Mini Police is a fun and interactive programme designed for children aged between nine and 11. The scheme aims to build trust with communities, promote responsible citizenship and help young people establish an interest and understanding in policing and community safety.

On Thursday (18 June), PCSO Richard Bunn from the Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Team (NPT), led a session focusing on road safety. The children were taken outside where they covered matters such as the five key components of crossing the road safely; stop, look, listen, think, and cross safely. The children also considered the risks involved when not following road safety advice and the potential hazards surrounding the road outside their school.

The session fell in Neighbourhood Policing Week, a national week of celebrating neighbourhood policing. The Welwyn Hatfield NPT are responsible for dealing with long and short-term neighbourhood issues, such as anti-social behaviour, theft, speeding and drug-related crime.

They are also responsible for building trust with the community. Officers such as Richard regularly attend local events and schools, aiming to break down barriers between the police and public.

PCSO Richard said: “Mini Police plays a crucial role in helping us to build the trust of our young people. Initiatives like this are at the heart of neighbourhood policing.

“Our session on road safety was really important and it was great to see the children participating so enthusiastically.”
