We live in challenging times and 2020 has really tested everyone’s resolve. So far it has been a very difficult year for most of us. The coronavirus has changed everything and perhaps for good. This year we had nearly 50,000 coronavirus related deaths in the UK and the economy is officially in recession.
Only last week it was announced that the UK economy has contracted by 20% and the pandemic has cost us £330 billion. Certain sectors of the economy have collapsed with the hospitality sector hit the hardest. It is only natural that people will feel upset and insecure, especially regarding their livelihoods. Perhaps it is even more natural that people will want to point the finger and blame those responsible and those who didn’t act quickly in response to the pandemic.
The UK has the worst recorded Covid-19 deaths in Europe and the second highest death rate in the world after the USA. Yet Greece, which has a fragile health care system, has been universally commended for its performance in crushing the pandemic and keeping deaths as low as possible. It is heartbreaking that there are more deaths of Cypriots living in the UK than in Cyprus, and the number of deaths at North Middlesex Hospital surpassed the death rate of all of Greece.
The government is partially responsible for its failure to contain the virus. However, the government may blame the medical experts’ advice but it’s still no excuse. The wearing of face masks should have been made mandatory at the start of the pandemic, not after 4 months when tens of thousands have died.
Unfortunately, we have to embrace that the worst is not over, especially for the economy and job security. The furlough scheme cannot last forever and there are some cases where employers have been abusing the government’s scheme. We are currently facing a catastrophe and Boris Johnson and his cronies have proved time and again they are not fit to govern.
Exams fiasco and the government
Lack of proper leadership has left the students in limbo, not knowing where to turn because of the government inability to deal with an issue that should have been dealt with in a proper and fair way. Changing their minds more often than I have had hot dinners not only creates confusion and frustration but lack of trust on a government who clearly do not know whether they are coming or going.
Priti Patel is completely and utterly out of order
It seems that when power goes to one’s head, matched with a hint of arrogance and disregard of what damage can inflict in this country, well Priti Patek matches 100% the description of someone failing to see one’s own problems and to be quite frank, she is not qualified to criticise any other country because she has to a lot to learn from France and the French people, that herself throwing abuse at a far more respectful country than any other in Europe.
Racism is shamefully well and alive in England. So Priti, think before you open your mouth. Even more shameful is to think that there are people who voted for this incompetent lot
