Moscow has reaffirmed its support for efforts to reunify Cyprus and its commitment to a comprehensive, viable and just solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions for the benefit of the people of Cyprus, a press release says, following a meeting the Russian FM Sergey Lavrov had on Tuesday with President Nicos Anastasiades, on the sidelines on the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The press release issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry says that the parties discussed in detail the current state of Cyprus settlement talks.
The officials also considered the prospects of further Russia-Cyprus cooperation in various areas and emphasised the mutual interest in continuing the political dialogue and constructive cooperation at international platforms, including the UN.
The officials also exchanged opinions on pressing international issues, including Russia-EU dialogue topics and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
