National Council meets to discuss Cyprus issue

President Nicos Anastasiades meets with the leaders and representatives of parliamentary parties on Monday, in the context of the National Council, his top advisory body on the handling of the Cyprus problem, during which they will discuss current developments in the reunification effort.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks have been underway since February aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.

Since the last National Council meeting, President Anastasiades has met twice with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu on July 4 and 7.

During Monday’s meeting, the President is expected to brief National Council members on the latest developments in the UN-led peace effort and they are expected to submit their positions on how to proceed.
