New Year Resolutions

A New Year usually welcomes a fresh start for many ideas and actions. Of course people will ask: “What is your New Year resolution?” and when I was asked that very question, my reply is: “My New Year’s resolution is NOT to make any New Year’s resolutions.” Instead I chose to simply set myself some realistic goals and targets to aim for.
It may sound crazy, but let’s think about it. Setting unrealistic goals can put far too much pressure on ourselves. We then strive to achieve that unrealistic goal to the point where it can create a negative effect, rather than a constructive result. The perfect example would be when personal training, people would say ‘I want to lose a numbered amount in weight’, or drop four dress or suit sizes in three months, for a special event or holiday. This can be disheartening because it may not be realistic or fully achieved safely, and then one would feel like they are now a failure. So rather than aiming to lose a certain amount of weight or get to a particular size, wouldn’t it just be easier and more sensible to say: “I aim to get fit and improve my health by changing my eating plan and exercise regime.” These are realistic goals and one can also have flexibility in achieving that desired outcome. For a start, when one trains and works out, depending on the type of training, the more muscle gained, the more compact the body will look since muscle weighs more that fat. So one would never achieve that unrealistic weight loss without looking too thin, gaunt, or having some other negative effects, so why do it if not necessary. Basically, allow for changes on route and re-calculate requirement for desired goal.
Whatever you goal or aim for the New Year ahead, like any top designer would do, picture it in front of you to see whatever it is that you want. You need pictures of what it could be like with sketches, feel like imagery, make a visualisation board and give yourself something to see and look forward to. Whether you want to aim and be like your favourite athlete or celebrity icon or if you missed that party or holiday you really wanted last year, aim for heading towards it this year, but don’t be discouraged if it will not be fully achieved this year, as one has to allow for obstacles and for the unexpected to occur.

Visualisation board
For things to happen, it is said you should visualise and see that you have already achieved those things and are present in that moment. So get a picture board going and put some pictures up of whatever you want. If it is that top athlete, put that picture up, add some pictures of whatever is needed to get to look like that, some dumbbells, a soccer ball, whatever it is, and don’t forget to place pictures of yourself on there. You can add more current pictures as you progress forward. If it is that holiday, add beautiful pictures of your destination, add pictures of the type of places you want to be at whilst there, when you are there, be it historic sites or a city, café or beach bar. Get those pictures up and place yourself there. Superimpose if you want to and it can be fun just doing that!

Work with your intuition
Anchor yourself down in a relaxed state, light a candle of a beautiful relaxing aroma and put on some calming music to help clear your mind. Allow only positive thoughts to enter, allow your mind to bring in clear constructive ideas and plans to get you motivated with good action plans to make it all happen.
Above all, be kind and true to yourself and others, believe anything can happen, do not let go of faith and hope, for it will all happen when the time is right.
