A 50-YEAR-OLD man, suspected of carrying out two armed bank robberies in Nicosia in the space of two months, killed himself as police were close to arresting him, it emerged yesterday.
The man, who wore sunglasses during the robberies and made no other effort to cover his face, was found hanged by police officers yesterday, in a small room on the roof of his apartment building in Aglandjia.
He was suspected of robbing two banks — one at gunpoint, the other with a knife — on December 2 and January 29 – getting away with some €10,500.
Police had managed to track him down and yesterday morning they searched his car with the permission of a relative.
Reports said officers found evidence in the vehicle, linking him to the robberies.
Before finding the man on the roof, officers had searched his flat.
Reports said the man, who has a family, was facing financial and personal problems.
