No More Walls Poem by Peter Droussiotis

I have reproduced it here as it may be easier to read;

No more walls

We listened to the news attentively

A dark path awaited our long journey

But this was no path through green trees or a golden field or a multi-coloured wood

We could hear no birds chirping or tweeting

This pathway was surrounded by dark walls and was totally silent

We never knew such loneliness

Despite all the gadgets we possessed and the stream of information we received incessantly

We were all alone

In this empty space

We kept walking as though transfixed by fear

But also determined to get through this

We knew there was an end to this walk

We kept moving, holding hands

Together, we knew we would find our way to the other side

Where there was light

That conviction kept us moving

Our pace quickened, the longer this went on

We walked fast, as though time was running out

Traumatised and exhausted

We hoped ceaselessly that we would soon see the light at the end of this long and airless tunnel

We talked to each other in short sentences, sometimes with just one word

And signalled with our eyes

To preserve our energies

What mattered was to never give up

Aspire endlessly, strive continuously to get to the other side

This nightmare, we knew, had an end

And we would not allow it to swallow us up in its total darkness

We walked fast to reach the light of life

Far in the distance a glimmer of it appeared

We looked back, as though to see the distance we had travelled

But this was impossible to measure

We ran and ran

Faster and faster, despite our breathlessness

The glow grew larger

Hundreds of faces

No, thousands of faces

So many faces

It was a sea of faces

Underneath the enriching light

We got closer and closer

A mass of people holding hands

In a circle

Looking at each other

Smiling

Under the light of life

We knew we had made it to the other side

We stood still

We embraced

Our eyes met

The walled tunnel had disappeared behind us

The darkness retreated

The silence was replaced by soothing orchestral sounds and the murmur of young singing voices

A choir of hope

We cried out

No more walls

No more walls

No more walls

We are all one

We are all one

We shall for ever be all one

Our souls were suddenly bathed in resplendent light

We had rediscovered ourselves

We had reconnected with our oneness

Happiness

Finally.
