A new maternity unit will get a royal blessing next week when Princess Anne visits for a tour of the state-of-the-art facility – which has just launched its own furry mascot.
Midsy the mascot with local youngster Daniel MalleyThe Princess Royal, patron of The Royal College of Midwives (RCM), will view the £21 million building and meet the winners of the RCM’s 2013 Maternity Team of the Year on Thursday.
She will hear first-hand from the staff who look after around 5,500 mothers and babies a year at the facility, part of the ongoing modernisation programme at the hospital in Sterling Way, Edmonton.
Julie Lowe, chief executive of North Middlesex University Hospital, said it was “honoured” to receive the Princess Royal at a unit they are “all rightly proud of”,
Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the RCM, added: “She will have a chance to hear first-hand from mothers, midwives and other maternity staff about the unit and how it is delivering a first class service for women, babies and their families.”
An official opening of the unit, which started taking expectant mothers in November is planned later in the year.
Just in time for the visit, the maternity unit has launched its own mascot – Midsy the bear – who will be given to every child born there.
The Princess Royal is set to receive two of the bears when she visits.
