Moorfields Eye Charity (MEC) is a fundraising and grant-making charity supporting the incredible and pioneering work of Moorfields Eye Hospital and its research partner, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. MEC provides targeted funds, above and beyond the responsibility of the NHS, to research cures, educate the researchers and clinicians of tomorrow, and find treatments for Moorfields’ patients and the millions of people affected by eye disease in the UK and around the world.
Grateful patients, families and friends are the source of the majority of our donations and the money they raise is invaluable. These donations enable the charity to fund a wide range of important research projects and improve services and facilities to ensure that Moorfields remains at the forefront of eye treatment, research and education. Moorfields Eye Charity is helping to provide the best possible care for Moorfields’ patients, invest in state of the art equipment, educate the ophthalmic researchers and doctors of tomorrow and fund research to find better and more effective treatments for blinding diseases.
Patient Michael Sotiriou says: “I am so grateful for the excellent care that I receive at Moorfields. It is really great to be able to support the research that Moorfields Eye Charity funds, knowing that it will make a difference for future patients to access the best possible treatments.”
Another grateful supporter, Sarah Mann, recently participated in our annual charity walk Eye To Eye. Sarah says: “I’ve been fortunate enough to see a marked improvement in my sight, so I’m hugely grateful to Moorfields and their ground-breaking work. I had no hesitation in signing up for Eye to Eye… I love walking and it’s a great chance to give something back. I’m proud and thankful to be able to support the hospital’s research work, bringing light and hope to people whose sight is at risk.”
Eye to Eye 2018 takes place on Sunday 4 March 2018. You can choose either a four or 14 mile route from Moorfields Eye Hospital to the London Eye. Please use the contact details below to register or find out more at www.moorfieldseyecharity.org.uk/eye-eye.
Some of the amazing projects that have been supported by MEC include: funding nurse counsellor roles to support patients at all stages of their disease, a pioneering stem cell trial aimed at restoring sight for people with age related macular degeneration , a tonometer which measures intraocular pressure in children with glaucoma and enhances existing resources in paediatric clinical and research work, and development of a hand held binocular, which provides extremely high-resolution images of the eye in a completely non-invasive manner.
All of the research and treatments mentioned, plus many more, have all been made possible due to the generosity of patients, their families and our supporters in the wider community. We would love you to consider supporting our work too. The team at the Moorfields Eye Charity is here to help you in all your fundraising efforts, however you choose to support us; you can make a one-off gift or sign up for a regular donation, join one of our fundraising events or choose to organise one yourself, or maybe you’d like to consider remembering Moorfields Eye Charity in your Will?
