Police arrest 34-year-old employee of the Larnaca General Hospital on suspicion of embezzling funds

34-year-old employee of the Larnaca General Hospital was on Tuesday remanded for six days in police custody on suspicion of embezzling funds from his workplace.
Speaking before the Larnaca District Court, the lead investigator in the case confirmed the suspect was arrested following a complaint to the authorities by the hospital’s head of the accounting department on Monday.
He explained that police are investigating claims the employee, who works at the Accident and Emergency desk, would register patients for a doctors appointment and accept the €10 charge, only to later cancel the slot and pocket the cash.
The investigator said police are examining 192 patient cancellations over June and July that the suspect was responsible for.
Police are still unclear over the exact amount allegedly embezzled by the suspect and expect to take some 40 witness statements in connection with the case.
The suspect’s defence lawyer did not object to the court’s approval of the remand request.
