Engagement in sports as a healthy and creative activity can act as a weapon and an instrument in developing social and spiritual resistance to drugs and other addictive substances, crime, racism, alienation, and the crisis of institutions, values and relations in the society today, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said.
In an address on Sunday at the closing of the Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship, which took place in Larnaca, read out by Minister of Defence Christoforos Phokaides, President Anastasiades expressed faith in the beneficial properties of sports for the society and youth, noting that sport activities were strong and effective antidotes to juvenile delinquency and all forms of antisocial behaviour.
Referring to the event, President Anastasiades said it was the largest beach volley event in Cyprus and one of the largest all round sports events, and praised the organisers for their achievement.
He pointed out that Larnaca, which hosted the championship for the second time, was now on the world map of large sports events and was justified in looking forward to even larger events.
