President briefs Barroso – Schulz on Cyprus issue

Cyprus President has briefed European Commission and European Parliament Presidents José Manuel Barroso and Martin Schulz over developments in the Cyprus issue.

Efforts are currently underway with a view to achieve an agreement between the two communities on a joint communiqué that will pave the way for the resumption of UN-led negotiations on the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of the island’s territory.

According to an official press release issued here on Tuesday the President called the two top European officials on his own initiative after having briefed on the phone European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Monday.

“In the course of their conversation, the President of the Republic briefed Mr Barroso and Mr Schulz, among other issues, about the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and more specifically on the efforts to achieve an agreement on a substantive joint communiqué that would allow the resumption of the talks with prospects for completion”, the press release says
