President to sign eight laws on foreclosures

The majority of laws – 8 in number – approved by the House of Representatives, including the basic law on foreclosures and a series of laws which offer effective protection to vulnerable groups of citizens, will be signed by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades.

This decision was taken during a two-hour meeting held Monday at the Presidential Palace under President Anastasiades.

The House of Representatives approved during an extraordinary plenary session on Saturday a bill on foreclosures together with a series of amendments tabled by the political parties. The bill is a precondition for the disbursement of the next tranche of the island`s €10 billion financial assistance programme. The bill was approved with 47 votes in favor, 7 against and one abstention.

In statements to the press, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said that the President received shortly before noon a total of 14 laws which were approved by the plenary of the House of Representatives last Saturday.

He also announced that the laws were conveyed to the Troika (Cyprus’ international lenders) by the Ministry of Finance.

He added that immediately after they were sent to the Troika, the President called a meeting with the participation of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, the Minister of Finance, the Government Spokesman, the Deputy Minister to the President and Deputy Government Spokesman.

Christodoulides said that “the remaining six laws approved by the House of Representatives will be referred to the Law Office of the Republic to examine their compatibility with the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus and the acquis communautaire.”

The President of the Republic will wait the remarks of the Troika before he takes the final decision on the six laws, Government Spokesman added.

In conclusion, he said that the unhindered continuation of Cyprus’ economic adjustment programme and the course of economic recovery and the stabilization of the economy without any problems is pivotal for the President in his decision making.
