Protesters in Nicosia, Cyprus denounce military operations in Gaza

A march calling for peace and the cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza took place in Nicosia on Monday.

The march was organised by the Cyprus Peace Council with the participation of Palestinians who live in Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot peace organisations.

Protesters marched to the Israeli embassy holding photographs of dead or wounded civilians, mainly children, and shouting slogans for peace in Gaza.

During the march two Israeli flags were burnt. Policemen standing behind a cordon of barbed wire-topped fences prevented marching protesters from approaching the embassy`s entrance.

A declaration was read out in Greek and in Turkish language, and was approved by the demonstrators.

It called, inter alia, for the cessation of Israel`s military operations in Gaza, the Israeli army`s withdrawal from the West Bank, the liberation of all Palestinian political prisoners and the return of all Palestinians to their homes on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 194.
