Cypriots living in the US are planning to have meetings with US Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry, in the framework of The International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA) conference, to take place in Washington on July 15-17, PSEKA President Philip Christopher has said.
This year the conference convenes in July, as 2014 marks the 40th anniversary since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, on July 20, 1974.
Cypriots living in the US will honour Biden and Kerry during ceremonies at the White House and the State Department.
Well informed sources have said that after his return from Cyprus, where he paid a visit in May, Biden sent a letter to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which includes extended references to the Cyprus problem and the moves which Turkey needs to make to its benefit.
PSEKA President said that the US government “must realize that Turkey has been slipping towards Islamic fundamentalism,” and underlined that while sanctions are being imposed on Russia, for its operations in Ukraine, nothing was done all these years against Turkey.
The conference will be attended by more than 100 leading members of the Greek-American community who will be briefed at the White House and the State Department on US policy on the Cyprus problem. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to express their disappointment over the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus` northern part and ask for pressure to be exerted on Ankara.
They will also meet with approximately 50 prominent members of the US Senate and Parliament.
