Rain storms were sweeping the island on Sunday with meteorologists predicting unsettling weather well into next week. The rain could be a blessing in disguise with dust levels currently soaring throughout Cyprus. According to police, strong rain showers and hail pounded the communities of Akaki, Peristerona and Meniko in the Nicosia district at midday on Sunday. More rain showers and possible thunderstorms are expected up until Thursday.
Fire Services throughout the island are currently on standby whilst traffic police are telling motorists to exercise every caution whilst driving. Doctors, meanwhile, are also telling the public to take precautions with dust levels – due to a cloud drift from the Sahara desert – very high. Children, the elderly and patients have been told to avoid open spaces until the dust subsides.
