The sense of smell is present for the purpose to protect us and keep us safe. Apart from liking or disliking particular smells, perfumes, aftershave, or that some people may think a certain smell is too strong, overpowering or even nauseating, there are some types of smells that most of us will find repugnant, like that of smoke or food that is rotten; This is to warn us of danger.
There are the good smells, that just feel oh so good, like tasty food we love or maybe a certain scent that just makes us feel great, confident, calm or desirable.
We are aware that our sense of smell is closely linked with controlling mood, memory, behaviour and emotion. Often a certain smell may trigger a long forgotten experience, or a particular scent may be associated with a particular person – whether it is an aroma of vanilla which reminds us of a comforting cake that Grandma used to bake or walking past a cafe and smelling the brewed coffee. In my case, the smell of freshly baked bread is unbeatable, it reminds me how blessed we are in life to have food in itself. For many, the aquatic fresh smell of the ocean reminds us of that beautiful holiday by the sea.
We try to recreate the feeling with scented room sprays, candles, or burning scented incense sticks, but as they burn out, the scent diminishes and is lost. However, when I performed at the Mind Body Soul exhibition last year, I was drawn to a stand by its glorious colourful display of stones and decanters full of intense aroma. On looking and picking each them up, I was stuck on this little marbled heart with the most amazing scent – a mixture like that of a musk type aftershave and forest berries. I was hooked and knew it would have a place in my home.
I was intrigued by these unusual, ornamental, scented, shaped stones and rocks. Speaking with the gentleman at the stand, I discovered that Robin previously worked in manufacturing with some of the top brands of cosmetic fragrances we are all familiar with. It was no wonder that these stones had so outstanding. A year later and I can still smell them around the home. The smells linger as they are within absorbent materials like that of volcanic rock from Italy that is responsible gathered. It holds the scent and diffuses.
The other creation pioneered is the absorbent material, a mixture of a plaster and ceramic technique with touch of creative colour marbling and in beautiful shapes. These can be placed as part of decor display or placed in drawers or cupboards to make all everywhere smell divine. Oddly, my chosen favourite fragrance, that I was originally drawn to, was called Aphrodite, a mix of black iris, vanilla, jasmine, as well as other added fragrant oils, perfectly apt and fit for any goddess of course.
There are many other fragrances, like that of fragrant lavender to help relax and unwind, some are for stress, some smell like a spa, some menthol type smells to help breathing; there is something for everyone’s requirement.
