This morning, Monday 14 July, police began a forensic search in Searle Place, N4 as part of an on-going investigation by police in Islington.
Information was received in July 2013 that contained allegations, dating back about 30 years, that human remains are buried in a garden. This does not relate to the current occupiers of the relevant address and is not connected to other investigations or operations.
Detectives have carried out extensive inquiries, including inquiries outside of the UK, to try to corroborate the allegations.
This investigation is at the stage where specialist teams will begin a systematic excavation of a residential property’s rear garden.
It is not known at this stage exactly how long the excavation will take but this will be reviewed on a daily basis.
Islington Borough Commander Gerry Campbell said: “Detectives in Islington have carried out a thorough investigation in order to corroborate the allegations made. After examining all the information the investigation has produced and with careful consideration, I have made the decision that it is appropriate to excavate the garden. Until the conclusion of the search it would be inappropriate of me to comment further”.
