Shortening of military service in Cyprus will not weaken the National Guard

The decision to shorten military service will not weaken the National Guard but on the contrary will strengthen it, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has said.

Speaking on Wednesday, during a visit to an army camp in Nicosia on the occasion of the Orthodox Easter holidays, the President said that the government is proceeding with the upgrading of the National Guard, and expressed hope that this will be the last effort to keep troops on the island and that the country will soon be reunified.

The President referred to the prospects for a Cyprus solution, deriving from the ongoing peace negotiations, pledging once again that the Greek Cypriot side is determined to work for the Republic of Cyprus to be a modern state in the context of what has been agreed, and fully consistent with its European obligations.

He also expressed hope that the Turkish Cypriot community will not agree to a solution that will be unfair to anyone and a solution that will lead to the conditions for a peaceful future, especially for the younger generations.
