Stefanou urges protection of progress made in Cyprus talks

AKEL leader Stefanos Stefanou has called for the agreements and understandings reached in previous Cyprus negotiations to be safeguarded, saying another milestone has passed without progress towards a settlement.

Speaking on Astra radio on 28 September, Stefanou said an October visit announced by the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, María Angela Holguín Cuéllar, signalled a further United Nations effort to move the process forward.

According to an AKEL statement, he said Holguín had indicated that a document setting out the points of agreement reached during previous negotiations was ready. He urged political leaders to preserve this negotiating framework, commonly referred to as the negotiation acquis.

Stefanou also expressed concern about the limited time remaining before UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s term ends in December.

He said Guterres’s familiarity with the Cyprus issue was valuable and warned of uncertainty about how the process would develop under his successor.

The AKEL leader criticised the government’s handling of the issue, arguing that some of its actions had worsened the atmosphere surrounding efforts to resume negotiations.
