Three arrests after car chase through Barnet, Enfield and Essex

THREE people have been arrested in connection with a high-speed car chase through Barnet, Enfield and Essex following a supermarket burglary in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

At around 2am on Tuesday October 2 CCTV cameras captured a black Ford Ka pulling up outside Waitrose in High Road, Whetstone before a suspect got out of the car and used a bin to smash the entrance doors.

They then went inside the store and allegedly stole bottles of whiskey worth around £1,000 as another suspect helped them load the stolen goods into the car.

Using the CCTV footage police traced the Ka to Bellevue Road in New Southgate where the chase, which eventually involved officers from Barnet and Essex, and a police helicopter, began.

Travelling at speeds of up to 80mph the suspects drove through areas such as Potters Bar and the A10 in Enfield before entering the wrong side of the A12 dual carriageway, causing other drivers to swerve to avoid a crash.

A police stinger brought the car to a stop by puncturing all four of its tyres on the A13 near Canvey Island in Essex.

Two men aged 32 and 23, and a 22 year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving. The 32-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of separate burglaries and robberies, while the 23-year-old man was arrested for a separate robbery.

They remain in custody at a Basildon police station.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Damon Cotter, of Barnet police, said: “They showed utter disregard for the safety of other road users and it is very fortunate there were no collisions in the circumstances.”

Any witnesses to the pursuit on the A12 in particular are asked to please call police on 020 8733 5836 or if you wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
