Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued an elderly woman from a block of flats on Campbell Road in Tottenham, this afternoon.
Most of a flat on the sixth floor of the nine storey block was damaged by fire. The woman – who was rescued from the flat above the flat on fire – was treated on the scene for slight smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service. A further 31 people left the flats before the Brigade arrived.
Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers from Walthamstow, Tottenham, Hornsey and Stoke Newington fire stations attended the incident.
The Brigade was called at 1455 and the fire was brought under control at 1610. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
London Fire Brigade is currently running a campaign designed to improve awareness of fire safety for the residents of high rise buildings and purpose built blocks and to encourage landlords and housing providers to act on their fire safety responsibilities.
