Two arrested following Barnet burglary

Officers have arrested two men following a cashpoint burglary in Barnet.

Police were called at approximately 01:30hrs on Thursday, 28 April to reports of a burglary at the Western Union on Station Road in Edgware.

At least two men broke into the premises using power tools and forced entry to a cash machine inside before stealing a large quantity of money in mixed denominations. They then left the scene.

Officers attended and noticed a vehicle acting suspiciously close by. They attempted to stop the car on Oakleigh Avenue; however, the vehicle failed to stop.

Following a short pursuit, a passenger decamped from the vehicle on Back Lane. He was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

The vehicle continued for a short period and then stopped on Watling Avenue. The driver ran off but was also arrested on suspicion of burglary, making off from police and dangerous driving.

The two men were taken to a north London police station where they remain in custody.

Officers recovered a large quantity cash from a satchel recovered from the vehicle.

Detective Sergeant Mark Williamson, from Barnet CID, said: “This was clearly a well planned attack on the Western Union. Had it not been for the swift response by Barnet police officers, the thieves would have got away with a significant amount of money.”
