The United States has welcomed the recent developments regarding the Cyprus issue, following the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format in Geneva.
In a post on “X”, U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Julie S. Davis highlighted the positive atmosphere of the discussions, stating that the U.S. welcomes the constructive tone cited by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
“The broader format meetings in Geneva today reflect good news on initiatives to build trust in Cyprus. US welcomes the constructive atmosphere cited by UN Secretary General @antonioguterres which paves the way for concrete next steps”, says the post.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
The informal meeting in Geneva, convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on March 17–18, aims to facilitate an exchange of views between the President of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot leader on ways to achieve progress on the Cyprus issue. Representatives from Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom are also attending the meeting.
