The Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, commended the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders for their strong determination and commitment to reach a comprehensive settlement as soon as possible, UN Spokesman has said.
Mr. Eide’s statement came following a new meeting earlier today between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
“The Special Adviser added that the leaders have jointly reviewed the work achieved by their negotiators to date, including the conclusion of the baseline assessment. The leaders are now entering substantive negotiations on unresolved core issues,” said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General.
He added the next meeting between the leaders is expected to take place on 29 June 2015, following further negotiations between both sides.
Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The leaders have been engaged in UN-led talks with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof
