UN Under-Secretary-General visits Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) laboratory in Cyprus

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has visited the laboratory of the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP).

Accompanied by the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spahar, Lacroix was briefed by CMP Members on the course of investigations and the procedures followed in the laboratory.

CMP Greek Cypriot Member Nestoras Nestoros has described Lacroix’s visit as very important as it sends the message that the United Nations will continue to support the Committee in its effort to solve various issues.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Hundreds of Greek Cypriots went missing during the invasion, while scores of Turkish Cypriots went missing in the early 1960s and during the summer of 1974. The remains of many of them have been located, identified and returned to the next of kin for a decent burial. Many more are still missing and their fate is unaccounted for.
