UNSG-Downer meeting over Cyprus postponed for Friday

The meeting between the UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon and his Special Advisor for Cyprus Alexander Downer to review developments in the Cyprus issue will take place on Friday, April 20.

The reasons for the meeting’s postponement, initially scheduled for Thursday, have not been revealed. Due to the rearrangement, Downer’s meetings with representatives of the parties involved have been rescheduled for next Monday.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.
