UNSG’s Deputy Spokesperson refers to the Joint Statement issued by the two leaders in Cyprus

The Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, referred, during Monday`s press briefing, to the Joint Statement issued by the two leaders in Cyprus, namely the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mustafa Akinci, on Sunday, on the first anniversary of the talks between them.

Specifically, he said: “The Greek and the Turkish Cypriot leaders issued a Joint Statement on the first anniversary of the talks between them, which was put out by the UN Mission there. The Greek Cypriot leader, Mr Nikos Anastasiades, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Mustafa Akıncı, stressed their commitment to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.”

“They noted that, although therewere still difficulties and differences, they were determined to show the necessary will and courage to overcome the remaining outstanding issues,” Haq noted.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 15, 2015, with a view to reunite Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
