US continues to fully support the Cyprus peace talks, State Department says

The United States continues to fully support the Cypriot-led process facilitated by the UN Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission, a State Department Spokesperson has said.

Invited to comment on press reports according to which Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland has presented Greece, Turkey and Cyprus a proposal as regards the Cyprus settlement , the Spokesperson said “we don’t read out the details of our diplomatic conversations“.

“Our focus is on supporting the parties’ efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation, which would benefit all Cypriots as well as the wider region“, he went on to say.

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci decided to meet in Geneva on the 9th of January 2017, on the 11th of January they will present their respective maps and that from the 12th of January, a Conference on Cyprus will be convened with the added participation of the guarantor powers, while other relevant parties shall be invited as needed.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May 2015, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
