US Embassy in Nicosia named as link in spying web

The American Embassy in Nicosia has been named as a link in the spying web that the United States allegedly set up in Europe.

German current affairs magazine Der Spiegel disclosed a national security agency document according to which half the terrace of the US Embassy in Nicosia was used for monitoring purposes.

The same document allegedly states that the Russians also used a covered terrace to operate its own electronic monitoring system.

According to the German magazine, information gathering units run by CIA operatives are active in 80 areas around the world, 19 of which are in Europe. Amongst the US embassies named as phone hacking centres are Geneva, Berlin, Stockholm, Warsaw and Brussels.
