USA engages Cypriots to further the goal of reunification

The US engages members of both communities in Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot, to further the goal of reunification of the island.

This was stated by a Spokesman of the US Embassy in Nicosia, when invited by CNA to comment on the written statement issued yesterday by the Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides regarding the meetings the so called foreign minister of the Turkish Cypriot pseudostate Ozdil Nami, held recently in the US.

“The US engages members of both communities to further the goal of reunification of Cyprus into a bizonal, bicommunal federation” the Embassy Spokesman told CNA.

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since May 2004, is still divided by Turkish troops since the summer of 1974.
The pseudostate established illegally in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus is recognized only by Ankara.

The Cypriot government condemned yesterday the meetings of the so called foreign minister and said that such contacts could create problems in the Republic`s relations with those states that facilitate them.
