We did everything possible to assist Turkish Cypriot voters, says Chief Returning Officer

The Electoral Service of the Interior Ministry has done everything possible to facilitate Turkish Cypriots voters, Chief Returning Officer Constantinos Nicolaides points out in a written statement.
Tension rose on Sunday morning at a polling station near Ledra Palace, in Nicosia, when Turkish Cypriot voters protested for not being included in the register.

Nicolaides says 58637 Turkish Cypriots automatically gained the right to vote in the European elections, with a new law adopted in March, adding that 1869 did so.

He stresses that “the Electoral Service of the Interior Ministry has done everything possible to facilitate Turkish Cypriots in exercising their voting right”.

Among other, a total of 50 special polling stations operated on Sunday for Turkish Cypriots to cast their vote. Furthermore, the Ministry arranged transfer of the Turkish Cypriots voters to the polling stations, where translators provided assistance to them. Also the ballot was bilingual (Greek and Turkish) and for the first time the elections website could be found in Greek, English and Turkish.
