We do not want to renegotiate the MoU with Troika

President Nicos Anastasiades has rejected foreign media reports that Cyprus wants to renegotiate the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it has signed with its international lenders.

Responding on Wednesday to a question on foreign media reports with regard to a letter he has sent to Troika officials, Anastasiades said these reports claiming that Cyprus wants to renegotiate do not correspond to reality.

“These are their own scenarios and their own answers,” he added.

He explained that the issues raised in his letter which are set to be discussed are completely different than those outlined in the media reports and concern increased efforts for economic recovery on the basis of the Memorandum.
Anastasiades also said on Wednesday that any potential additional economic measures needed will be addressed through proper management of state expenditure and by reducing unnecessary spending and not through new taxes.

Government policy does not aim at increasing taxes but at stabilizing the taxation system, he added.

Eurozone Finance Ministers are to discuss on Thursday a letter President Anastasiades has sent to the members of the Troika on the implementation of the adjustment programme by Cyprus.

In his letter sent last week, the President referred to “a number of very pressing issues which need to be addressed the soonest”.

Last March Cyprus agreed with international lenders on 10 billon euro aid package, under which it closed down the Popular Bank, and imposed painful losses on deposits of more than 100,000 euros held at the euro zone state`s biggest lender, Bank of Cyprus. Both institutions were heavily exposed to the Greek debt.
