Don’t let the winter blues get the better of you, make every moment count. Make winter the time to catch up on chores such as home decor and indoor declutter and clearance. New home decoration creates connection; when we are happy and proud of the way or home space looks, we are more likely to invite friends over to socialise. When our space looks beautiful, fresh and clean, it makes us think it is okay to spend more time relaxing and connecting.
Studies have found that the elements of the natural world, or even reminders of them, can have a positive effect on our mental and physical health. Therefore, bringing some of the outside in can be great for our wellbeing, just by incorporating lots of daylight, organic plants and materials with a combination of light green colour and natural wood, bamboo etc.
Creating our dream home space of welcoming comfort can influence our mood, productivity and lifestyle in general and it can make us feel more content. So getting down to decorating can create some home harmony. Use any excuse or motivation to get you doing it, whether it is for a Christmas gathering with friends or just for you. Set a timeframe and make those changes. Sometimes just changing a few accessories can make a big difference – colour change of cushions or throws, beautiful lamps, statement statues, mirrors or pictures.
You can make a lot of things yourself – this often adds extra pleasure and fulfilment because you have actually created some things, be it cushions or adding a ribbon to something – just get busy.
Clear a cupboard or drawer out and create some space with organisation of where to find things; put things in zipper sandwich bags for easy find, some things can go in empty little plastic take-out boxes or jars, label up with what’s in it. This works well for make-up, keeping all eyeliners and mascaras separate from concealer and foundations for example. Decorate or cover some old jars with stickers, material, matching ribbon and a bow, for keeping make-up brushes or hair brushes upright. Go online for some inspiration.
When clearing out a wardrobe, we often find things we may not have worn for a while because we actually forgot we even have it. So it will be a new wear again, or maybe just revamp it with some new accessories if it’s a one piece, or change the top or bottom part accordingly if it’s a skirt, top or trouser. A different belt, boots or shoes can completely change a look.
Finding a hobby that can be done indoors is perfectly ideal when we tend to spend more time in the comfort of our own home; many of us spend far more time outside socialising in the summer, whilst being indoors in the warmth and watching TV box sets seems a better option in the winter. Some creative hobbies can be done during both, and why not even sell some of those unique things made!
Get baking and cooking in bulk batches so that you can freeze some food for later. It makes life so much easier for those late nights home or lazy days when you just don’t feel like cooking. Be ahead of the game with forward thinking and it can just save you so much time later.
Make it a day out with friends and go Christmas shopping in a shopping mall – its heated in the stores – don’t do it all online! Go to a Christmas market or mall, have lunch or coffee and enjoy some time out the old-fashioned way.
Make winter fun, get busy and make it wonderful
