A young Serbian man drowned on Sunday afternoon while swimming in Limassol.
The police reported that the 25 year-old had gone to a beach near a hotel in eastern Limassol with friends and, at around 2.30pm, went into the sea to swim.
According to the information at hand, the police believe the young man, who was not a strong swimmer, was overcome by the waves. He was pulled out of the water by his friends assisted by lifeguards stationed at a neighbouring beach.
In spite of the first aid provided, the young man did not gain consciousness and doctors at Limassol General Hospital pronounced him dead on arrival.
According to Limassol CID head Ioannis Soteriades, the young man, who was not named by the authorities, arrived in Cyprus for a holiday two days ago. He had been staying at the home of his uncle who is a permanent resident of Cyprus.
The young Serbian is the 16th person to drown in Cyprus seas since the start of the year.
