£14million boost for Haringey roads

New cycling routes, better pedestrian links and vital safety measures are among a raft of improvements unveiled as part of plans to spend £14million on improving the borough’s roads.

The Sustainable Transport Works Plan (STWP) sets out a number of schemes to ease congestion, improve road safety and make it easier to travel round the borough by bike or on foot.

Investments include:

 A £4million revamp of the route linking White Hart Lane station to the new Tottenham Hotspurs stadium

 £5million to transform Crouch End into a walking and cycling friendly hub over the next 3 years as part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods project

 Delivery of the Haringey section of the Farringdon to Bowes Park and Hornsey to North Hill Quietways cycle routes

The council has pledged to get more people out of their cars and travelling around the borough on foot, by bike or on public transport. Our transport strategy, announced last week, sets out our vision to become a more cycle and pedestrian friendly borough. New parking permits, which come into effect from April 3, will also help to make Haringey a cleaner and greener borough by ensuring vehicles that produce more carbon emissions pay a higher price to park on our streets.

Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Peter Mitchell said:

“I am delighted to announce this multi-million pound investment into our roads and proud that we are able to commit so much funding in particular towards making it easier for people to walk and cycle.

“We want Haringey to be a safe, attractive and well maintained borough that our residents are proud to live and work in.”

Other projects included in the STWP include:

 £1.2milion on improving and making safe two retaining walls in Highgate

 £3million to bring deteriorating road and pathways back up to scratch

 £750,000 for improving and replacing lighting to make our streets safer, as well as upgrading to energy efficient LED lights

 A contribution towards a £1.2m jointly funded project to improve safety measures at Archway Bridge

 £560,000 to reduce the risk of flooding in the borough

 £300,000 to deliver parking schemes across the borough where residents have told us they have parking problems.
