In The Vision, Tanya Liveras Candy tells the true story of her grandfather, the Cypriot entrepreneur killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
When news broke that Andreas Liveras had been killed in the terrorist attacks on Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, it made headlines around the world and shook the Cypriot community that knew him well. He had made his fortune in Britain and became a pioneer of Monaco’s superyacht industry. His story began as the son of a farmer in Cyprus.
Now his granddaughter, Tanya Liveras Candy, tells that story in her debut book, The Vision: One Man’s Extraordinary Life and the Siege That Shocked the World. Moving between the life Andreas built and his final day in India, the book explores the ambition, risks and choices behind his success, without losing sight of the tragedy that brought it to an end.
Drawing on survivor accounts, interviews, family archives and historical records, Tanya reconstructs Andreas’s final hours inside the Taj. The result is a gripping account of the siege, told with the pace of a novel and the weight of a true story.
“My grandfather’s death became part of one of the defining terrorist attacks of the 21st century, but that was only the final chapter of an extraordinary life,” Tanya says.
“I wanted to tell the story of the man behind the headlines: a pioneer of the superyacht industry, and the remarkable journey that led him there.”
Tanya hopes readers will gain a deeper understanding of what unfolded inside the Taj and take inspiration from Andreas’s journey.
“Through writing The Vision, my hope is that readers are not only gripped by the events of 26/11 and gain a deeper understanding of what unfolded inside the Taj, but are ultimately inspired by Andreas’s journey and reminded that extraordinary lives are shaped not by circumstance, but by the choices we make along the way.”
Published to coincide with the 18th anniversary of the attacks, The Vision tells a remarkable Cypriot life story that has never previously been told in full.
