John Stockley had just popped to Tesco at 3.50pm today when two men were seen jumping over his fence in Chace Avenue.
An eyewitness called police and when Mr Stockley came home at 4.20pm, he found his two young dogs had been stolen from their kennels.
His partner, 42-year-old care worker Susan Fitzsimmons said; “A woman was in the alleyway and saw two men jump over the fence, so she rang the police.
“The alleyway they ran down leads to another road and the police got there pretty quickly and they were patrolling the area.
“They reckon they had a car waiting there.
“I just hope we get them back.”
Ruby the spaniel is one year old and Peggy the terrier is three.
The theft has left the couple shocked and their five other dogs appear to be frightened.
Miss Fitzsimmons, who has lived in Potters Bar for 20 years, said; “It’s broad daylight.
“I couldn’t stop crying at work.
“Work sent me home.
“It just worries me what’s going to happen to them.
“You think about dog fighting and dog-baiting.
“Nothing like this has happened before.
“The scary thing is they must have been watching the house.”
Yesterday Mr Stockley, a 53-year-old taxi driver, had an unusual encounter with a man on his driveway.
Mr Stockley came home from work to find the man standing there.
The stranger then asked if Mr Stockley wanted to sell his van to which Mr Stockley said no.
If you can help police with their investigation, call 101.
