Situations change through mass participation, not through abstention
Statement of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou on 2016 local municipal elections
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th December 2016, Nicosia
On Sunday, citizens are called upon to go to the polls to elect new local authorities.
These elections are very important as they affect people’s day-to-day life. Local government is the form of power closest to the people. It has the ability to identify, prioritize and promote small and big problems. Its decisions directly affect the local community. It can make people’s lives better. At stake in these elections is whether local authorities continue to be close and at the side of citizens, and to continue to fulfill their role. This is what people demand.
With their vote citizens can create the preconditions for local authorities to continue to serve their local communities.
To continue to make a substantial and effective contribution to the development of local communities and people’s prosperity.
We urge citizens with their mass participation in the elections to elect local authorities. Situations and developments change through participation, not through abstention.
We urge citizens to vote for the candidates and electoral lists supported by AKEL-Left-New Forces. They should be certain that all the strength they give to our candidates will be returned back to them many times.
For AKEL, local self-government was and always is a priority.
Whenever and wherever local communities have put their trust in the candidate Mayors, Councilors and School Boards supported by AKEL, they have seen their Municipalities, towns and villages being transformed into examples of proper management, good organization, sustainable development and effective provision of services.
AKEL in these elections too addresses citizens putting forth its vision, positions and expressing a determination to work.
For AKEL, Local Elections are a starting point for new struggles.
For new relationships of trust with citizens.
For a new beginning and a common course with society.
For what unites and inspires us.
For what we deserve.
For what we must change.
To make our life better and our productive model fairer.
To make local authorities more effective.
For citizens, with citizens.
With a plan and a vision.
