President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades does not need any prudence or political will lessons on the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said on Thursday, commenting on remarks by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“We hope that Mr. Erdogan realises that with such supercilious remarks one cannot form the right climate for the resumption of a substantive dialogue. President Anastasiades needs neither prudence nor political will lessons for the solution of the Cyprus problem,” Stylianides said, adding that the President has proven through his political course that he is a consistent defender of the common interests of a joint homeland for Greek and Turkish Cypriots.”
He noted that Erdogan should guide Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu towards changing his stance.
Stylianides also pointed out that the Greek Cypriots want a solution and that this solution should be discussed at the negotiating table with an aim to reach a solution the soonest possible.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
