The first funding bids to Transport for London’s (TfL) Streetspace Fund, to aid social distancing and support active travel in Haringey, have been successful, the council is pleased to announce.
The council submitted 18 funding bids in total as part of TfL’s Streetspace Fund, to support additional pavement widening, new plans for temporary cycle routes, and the creation of low traffic neighbourhoods, in Haringey.
Bids for Cycleway Superhighway 1, amounting to more than £600,000 have been approved, which will support important works to extend the existing cycle network to link with neighbouring boroughs.
The funding will also help to respond to residents’ concerns about safety and will support improvement works across the route to address segregation issues with cyclists, pedestrians and road traffic.
The funding will go a long way towards improving the safety of residents walking or cycling in the borough. The works are expected to be carried out in coming months and will support the take-up of active travel through fully connected routes that residents can be confident in.
The full list of funding bids submitted to TfL and further information about Haringey’s Streetspace Plans is now available, along with A map of the borough showing all the bids (PDF, 794KB). The outcome of further bids is expected in tranches over coming weeks.
Cllr Hearn, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Sustainability at Haringey Council, said:
“At the height of the pandemic, Haringey’s roads were quiet and the air much clearer. As lockdown eases, we are already seeing the return of heavy traffic and pollution – if we are to move away from a rise in car emissions, we need to return to work using climate friendly means such as cycling.
“This is why we are particularly excited to learn our bids for Cycle Superhighway 1 improvements and extension have already received money from TfL. Whilst we wait to hear the outcome from TfL on the rest of the bids, the funding we have secured will be put to good use immediately – to support the safety of our residents on our cycle routes, as well as provide options for active travel that our residents can have confidence in.”
