AKEL Secretary General meets Turkish Prime Minister and FM in Turkey

The Cyprus reunification talks are expected to be the focus of separate meetings left wing AKEL party Secretary General Andros Kyprianou will have today Saturday with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, in Turkey.

Kyprianou, who is visiting Turkey at the invitation of Çavuşoğlu, said yesterday speaking during a panel discussion at Kültür University in Constantinople that there has been progress and convergences in the ongoing Cyprus talks but that there are still differences in the issues of security, property and territory.

“We will seek to discuss all this during our meetings,” he said, adding that he would also broach the issue of guarantees.

Kyprianou pointed out that the positions he will convey to the Turkish officials will not go beyond the long-standing positions of the National Council, the President`s top advisory body on the Cyprus problem in which all parliamentary party leaders take part.

He also said that before his trip he met with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades because he does not wish to put forward positions which are not in line with the Greek Cypriot side`s positions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks resumed last May aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof
